Fire Safety from the Laguna Vista VFD

Dec 16, 2025

The time of year is approaching when air conditioning units are switched from cooling to heating, and of course, many people also use portable space heaters for a little extra warmth. We all love that cozy feeling—especially with a cup of hot chocolate while watching holiday movies. However, heaters are one of the leading causes of residential fires. When using portable or space heaters, be sure to follow these extra precautions to stay safe:

Heaters should be kept at least 3 feet away from walls and any other materials that can catch fire.

Space heaters should be plugged directly into a wall outlet without the use of extension cords, regardless of the cord’s rating.

Always place heaters on a level, stable surface.

Never leave the house with heaters turned on.

When using central heating systems, many of us notice a “funny smell” the first time the heater is turned on. This odor is caused by dust that has accumulated on the heating elements or coils and is burned off when the system is activated after a long period of inactivity. The most important thing you can do is ensure the unit is properly maintained and that filters are changed every three months, or sooner if needed.
